A Mania for Mirages in which a Phrase Is an Ice Cream – Raymond Farr

I.

My art life keeps eating
And calling me up at 3 am

To say “chocolate mint ice cream,
Chocolate sauce & almonds”

As though I had a mania
For phrases in which poetry
Is cocoa-flavored

The result is—
I am not reassured

I am taking my world view

Into the barber shop
And changing my outlook

II.

At Filene’s Basement
I corner the imaginary poetry dog
“on the basement stair

& coming up”

The Russians keep him secretly engaged

All he desires is a thing he can love—
A fire to put out
An absence he feels deeply about

& more deeply
With every pared down line that he barks

I think he thinks it exultant labor

This explains inanimate objects
